What if I’m not flexible or out of shape?
This yoga is designed for anyone! If you are not flexible or out of shape, those are great reasons to do the yoga. The series will help increase your flexibility and give you a great cardiovascular workout so you can get back in to shape.
What if I have never done yoga before?
It is normal to feel a little nervous or intimated before your first class. This is a beginner’s class designed for beginners. Many students who try Bikram yoga have never done yoga before.
How do I get started?
Just come to the studio 20 minutes before your first class. Bring a mat, beach towel and water or you can get them at the studio. Come on an empty stomach and well hydrated.
Why the heat?
Increases the flexibility of the body so you can stretch safely in to the postures.
Increases your heart rate which provides for better cardiovascular results.
Helps the body release toxins from the organs, muscles and tissues.
Thins the blood for increased circulation.
You are changing the construction of your body as you perform these postures. The heat makes your body more malleable. Warm muscles are more elastic and less susceptible to injury.

Can I lose weight?
Yes! The series is a great way to burn calories, tone muscles and boost your metabolism. You can burn between 350-600 calories in a Bikram class. Consistency is key; the more you come the more results you will see. As you develop a regular practice you will notice that often your cravings for sugar and caffeine decrease and as you feel better you will naturally start to make better food choices.
Is it normal to feel dizzy, nauseous, or lightheaded in class?
In your first few classes it is normal to feel a little dizzy or nauseous at some point in class. If you feel these sensations don’t try to push through it, just take it easy and rest as you need to. Remember to breathe through your nose, listen to your body and take care of yourself during class. As your body gets acclimated to the heat, improves, and detoxes these sensations will disappear. A headache is a symptom of dehydration. Being well hydrated before class will help you feel better during class.
How often should I practice?
Come as much as you can! Yoga is cumulative, the more you come, the better you will feel. Bikram recommends daily practice for one or two months for a new you. Regular practitioners average 3-5 times a week.
What if I have a health concern?
Always follow your doctor’s orders and consult with your doctor if you are on any medications or have any health issues.
Why is the yoga room carpeted and the room so bright?
Bikram Yoga Athens is a certified Yoga College of India affiliate school. All affiliated schools must adhere to very specific guidelines to keep the yoga as pure as possible. As you sweat in class the carpet helps ensure your safety. The lighting lets students easily see themselves in the mirror and allows the instructor to easily see all the students.
What if I have past injuries?
With a consistent practice the yoga can help heal old injuries and break down scar tissue.
